Shelly Plug M Gen3 2-pack: smart plugs with Matter and energy monitoring

The Shelly Plug M Gen3 is a compact Schuko plug adapter from Shelly's third generation. With the 2-pack you could switch a washing machine and a dehumidifier, or keep an eye on how much your TV and PC draw. Besides switching on and off, the plug measures power, energy, voltage and current, which you can view in the Shelly app.

The biggest change from older models is Matter. It lets you add the plug not just to Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings, but also to Apple Home via Matter. It connects over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, with Bluetooth helping during setup. Shelly says no hub is required; schedules and actions are stored on the plug itself, so they keep working without an internet connection.

Shelly rates it for up to 13 A or 3,000 W with resistive loads. It has an internal temperature sensor plus protection against overvoltage, overcurrent and overload. The button on the housing lights up in several colours and shifts from green through yellow to red depending on current consumption. At 46 × 46 × 85 mm the plug is fairly slim, so the socket next to it usually stays usable.

Worth knowing: the 3,000 W rating applies to resistive loads such as heaters; for motors or power supplies with high inrush current you should assume a lower limit. According to Shelly, custom scripts only run when Matter is disabled. The Plug M Gen3 doesn't support 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Zigbee.
