The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is an external SSD for anyone who wants to carry a lot of data around: photos and videos from the camera, project folders or a laptop backup. 2 TB holds plenty, and at just over 10 × 5 cm and under a centimetre thick, the drive is smaller than a smartphone.
It connects over USB-C using USB 3.2 Gen 2. SanDisk quotes up to 1,050 MB/s read and up to 1,000 MB/s write. That is much faster than a classic external hard drive and makes the biggest difference when copying large video files. You only get full speed from a port that also supports USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbit/s).
The drive is built for travel: according to the manufacturer it survives drops of up to three metres and is IP65-rated against dust and water jets. The silicone shell adds grip, and the loop lets you clip it to a bag with a carabiner. You can protect your data with a password; SanDisk says encryption is handled in hardware with 256-bit AES.
Worth knowing: password protection and encryption need SanDisk's software, available for Windows and macOS. On a phone or tablet the SSD works as plain storage, provided the device supports external USB-C drives. It usually ships formatted for Windows and Mac; for consoles or TVs you may need to reformat it, which erases any data on it.
