HP Smart Tank 7305: ink tank all-in-one printer with duplex printing and document feeder

The HP Smart Tank 7305 is an all-in-one for home and home office that uses large ink tanks instead of cartridges. You refill from bottles: according to HP, an HP 32XL black bottle lasts about 6,000 pages and the HP 31 colour bottles about 8,000 pages. The box already contains two black bottles and one of each colour, which HP says is enough ink for up to three years of average use. You can check the levels at any time through the windows on the front.

For everyday office work the 7305 brings two things many entry-level ink tank models lack: a 35-sheet automatic document feeder and automatic two-sided printing. That lets you copy or scan multi-page contracts without placing each page by hand, and save paper when printing. The paper tray holds 250 sheets, and borderless photo printing up to A4 is supported.

HP quotes 15 pages per minute in black and 9 in colour to ISO standards, with the first page out in about 14 seconds. It connects via dual-band Wi-Fi, Ethernet or USB. From your phone you can print and scan with the HP Smart app, Apple AirPrint or Mopria on Android.

Worth knowing: there is no fax, and the feeder scans one side only, so double-sided originals have to be turned over once. Ink tank printers make most sense if you print regularly. If the printer sits unused for weeks, print a test page now and then to keep the printheads clear. The printheads can be replaced separately. To get the three-year warranty you need to register the printer with HP.
