Philips HD9339/80 Series 5000: 1.7-litre glass kettle with blue light

The Philips HD9339/80 from the Series 5000 is a glass kettle with stainless steel trim. It holds 1.7 litres and runs at 2,200 W. The clear body lets you see the water level and the boil directly, while a blue light in the base shows that it is switched on. Markings on the glass help you measure by the cup.

The heating element sits flat and concealed in the base, which makes it easier to keep clean. A removable micro-mesh filter in the spout keeps limescale bits out of your cup. The lid comes off completely, making filling and descaling simpler.

The kettle sits on a 360° base, so you can put it down from any angle, and spare cord winds up underneath. For safety Philips lists a Strix control, automatic shut-off and boil-dry protection that switches it off when there is no water inside.

Worth knowing: there is no temperature setting, so the HD9339 always boils fully. For green tea or baby formula you will need to let the water cool. The cord is short at 0.75 m, so it needs a nearby socket. Glass shows limescale clearly, and regular descaling keeps it looking good. At 1.15 kg empty it is a bit heavier than plastic kettles.
