UNO Flip!: UNO variant with double-sided cards for 2 to 10 players

UNO Flip! builds on the game most people know: you play cards that match the top card by colour or number and try to be first to empty your hand. When you're down to one card, you call "UNO". What's new is that every card has two sides, a light side and a dark side, each with its own colours and numbers.

The light side plays much like regular UNO. When a FLIP card is played, every card is turned over – in your hand, on the discard pile and on the draw pile. From then on the dark side applies, and according to Mattel it's much tougher: cards like Draw Five and Skip Everyone bring far harsher penalties. Whoever plays the next FLIP card decides when to switch back.

Mattel says the pack contains 112 cards and the rules. The game is rated for 2 to 10 players aged 7 and up. Since the basic rules are familiar, UNO Flip! is quick to explain and works well for mixed groups of kids and adults.

Worth knowing: because the cards are printed on both sides, everyone at the table can see the reverse of your hand, i.e. the other side. That's intentional and part of the tactics, but it can confuse newcomers at first. Flip cards can't be mixed with a regular UNO deck. The harsh dark-side penalties can make games run longer than classic UNO.
