Fire HD 8 Kids Pro (2024): 8-inch tablet for kids aged 6 to 12 with parental controls

The Fire HD 8 Kids Pro is the kids' tablet for school-age children. Unlike the Kids version for younger children, it comes in a slim case instead of a thick foam frame, and the interface feels more grown-up. The 2024 version brings 3 GB of RAM, noticeably more than the previous model according to Amazon, and a 2.0 GHz hexa-core processor.

The 8-inch display has a resolution of 1280 × 800 pixels, which is fine for shows, learning apps and e-books. Amazon quotes up to 13 hours of battery life, and it charges via USB-C. The 32 GB of storage can be expanded with a microSD card, handy for downloaded films and audiobooks for car journeys.

The key point for parents is the parental controls. In the Amazon Parent Dashboard you set screen time limits, approve purchases and app requests and see what your child is doing. The browser filters unsuitable sites, and calls and video calls only work with approved contacts. One year of Amazon Kids+ is included; after that it is paid but can be cancelled at any time.

The tablet comes in a Marvel Avengers design and a Jungle Cat design. Both are technically identical; only the case differs.

Worth knowing: Fire tablets run Fire OS, not Google's Android. Apps come from the Amazon Appstore; Google services such as YouTube Kids or the Play Store are not preinstalled.
